History of 43 Meeting Street

Preservation and Charleston go hand in hand, and with all of the beautifully restored properties on the Peninsula, it can be easy to think of them as commonplace, when, in fact, they are anything but. That being said, there are also restoration projects throughout the city that just stand out amongst the crowd. This proves to be the case with the gorgeous residence located at 43 Meeting Street. We are proud to announce that we have just acquired this incredibly special property as a short term rental, and we can’t wait to share the history and restoration process with you. 43 Meeting, also known as the James Mitchell House, was constructed around 1798 and is a classic Charleston single style house. In addition to its prominent location South of Broad, the property also served as a residence for Henry William deSaussure, the former director of the U.S. Mint and appeals judge. Later the home of preservation maven, Elizabeth Young, this historic property recently underwent an extensive restoration process that included putting the two-story piazza back in place after it had been removed in the early 20th century.

Restoration Process

In 2012, this South of Broad gem underwent a massive restoration, which, thankfully included the re-installment of the two story piazzas that had previously been removed. Before the project began this is what the home looked like:

While still a beautiful Charleston Single, it is obvious that there is something missing—this is where preservation and real estate expert Kristopher King comes in. A Post and Courier article states that “[w]hen Kristopher King looked at the property as a possible project for an Australian couple looking to invest in Charleston, he realized he had a rare opportunity on his hands.” King along with architect Glenn Keyes and contractor Jim Rhode used old photographs to try and be as historically accurate as possible with the restoration. The piazza entrance off of Meeting Street proved to be the only element that could not be entirely accurate due to lack of evidence as to how it was originally constructed. Yet, “King says that the front door design approach fits the rest of the property” with its relatively simple construction. While the replacement of the piazzas definitely makes a grand impact on the exterior, King and the rest of his team also did an amazing job on the interior of the home. The interior proved to be challenging because the home used to be divided into two units, and has since been reverted to a single-family home. We can attest to the fact that this house is beyond gorgeous and represents what a proper restoration should be.
